Traffic challan amounts in Rajasthan: fines, e-challan and payment
Rajasthan moved to cashless, online-only challan payments in 2026. The full fine schedule under the MV Act 2019, plus the state rules every RJS aspirant and driver should know.
Rajasthan enforces the national Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Act 2019 fine schedule, with the state's own twist: since April 2026 it is entirely cashless — challans can only be paid online through the state's ITMS portal, under Rule 167 of the Central Motor Vehicle Rules, 1989.
The national fine schedule (MV Amendment Act 2019)
The Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Act, 2019 (in force from 1 September 2019) raised fines roughly five to ten times over the old rates. Most states — including Rajasthan, Gujarat, Delhi, UP, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu — enforce this central schedule, with some states adjusting particular amounts and others treating offences like drunk driving as court challans (where the final fine is set by a magistrate, not a fixed amount).

⚠️ Important. Under Section 200 of the MV Act states fix their own compounding amounts, and offences marked "court challan" (dangerous driving, drunk driving, red-light jumping in Delhi) end in a magistrate deciding the fine. Amounts above are the standard enforced ranges — always check the official e-challan portal before paying.
Rajasthan specifics
- No cash fines. The April 2026 notification (Transport & Road Safety Dept, 27 April 2026) ended cash payments. Payments go through the ITMS/e-challan portal only — making the process fully recorded and reducing manual handling.
- 60-day window. Challans should be cleared within 60 days of issue to avoid doubling or licence/fitness complications.
- Who can issue. Enforcement powers now rest with police personnel above the rank of head constable and authorised transport department officers; designated officers hear objections and complaints.
- Scale of enforcement. In 2025 the state issued 27.61 lakh challans — including 12.06 lakh for overspeeding, 5.23 lakh for no helmet, 1.96 lakh for no seat belt and 69,000 for drunk driving (as told to the Assembly by Dy CM & Transport Minister Prem Chand Bairwa).
- City hot-spots. Jaipur's AI camera zones (MI Road, Ajmer Road, Tonk Road flyover, Rambagh Circle) generate most e-challans, usually reflected on the portal within 2–5 days.
- Helmet. Rider and pillion both face the ₹1,000 helmet fine; the state has floated the idea of giving free ISI helmets with each challan.
- Mobile phone use. Using a handheld phone while driving draws ₹1,000–5,000 depending on the recording officer — the single most common "recorded" offence after speeding.
Check & pay
- Go to echallan.parivahan.gov.in or the Rajasthan transport portal (rto.rajasthan.gov.in).
- Search by vehicle number (e.g. RJ14 XX XXXX), DL number or challan number.
- Pay via UPI / card / net banking and download the receipt.
Rajasthan follows the central 2019 schedule, so the ranges above are the ones in practice. Compounding amounts under s.200 MV Act and court-determined fines can vary — verify any specific challan on the official portal before paying.
