Traffic challan amounts in Delhi: the full penalty chart
Delhi follows the national 2019 schedule but routes dangerous driving, drunk driving and red-light jumping to court — where the magistrate, not the police, sets the fine.
Delhi Traffic Police publish an official penalty chart that follows the Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Act 2019 schedule, with one important difference: several serious offences are court challans — the fine amount is decided by a magistrate, not fixed on the spot.
The national fine schedule (MV Amendment Act 2019)
The Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Act, 2019 (in force from 1 September 2019) raised fines roughly five to ten times over the old rates. Most states — including Rajasthan, Gujarat, Delhi, UP, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu — enforce this central schedule, with some states adjusting particular amounts and others treating offences like drunk driving as court challans (where the final fine is set by a magistrate, not a fixed amount).

⚠️ Important. Under Section 200 of the MV Act states fix their own compounding amounts, and offences marked "court challan" (dangerous driving, drunk driving, red-light jumping in Delhi) end in a magistrate deciding the fine. Amounts above are the standard enforced ranges — always check the official e-challan portal before paying.

Delhi specifics
- Court challans. For drunk driving, dangerous driving, wrong-side driving and red-light jumping the traffic police file a challan and the fine is fixed by the court — usually around the statutory figures (₹10,000 / ₹15,000 for drunk driving) but at the magistrate's discretion.
- Tougher rules (May 2026). New Delhi challan rules require clearing 50% of the fine before appealing to court, and chronic offenders risk licence suspension.
- AI enforcement coming. Delhi is rolling out an AI-driven Integrated Traffic Management System with ANPR cameras that will auto-generate challans for licence, insurance and signal violations.
- Lok Adalat settlements. Pending challans (except drunk driving, hit-and-run, underage driving, racing) can often be settled at a reduced rate in the periodic National Lok Adalats — register for a token to use it.
- RC renewal blocked. Pending challans block registration (RC) renewal — a real headache at sale or transfer time.

Delhi follows the central 2019 schedule; court-determined fines for the "court challan" offences can exceed the fixed amounts shown above.
